PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona public school students would be required to receive CPR training at least once in grades 7-12 under a bill approved by the state Senate.
The bill by Democratic Sen. Barbara McGuire of Kearney is designed to add to the pool of citizens trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. McGuire says most heart attacks happen at home and having students trained in the lifesaving technique will save lives.
The bill approved on a 25-3 vote Tuesday requires districts to provide students the training beginning in the 2015-2016 school year. Districts decide which grades they teach and children whose parents object will be exempted.
An effort by Democratic Sen. Ed Ableser to amend the bill to require teachers to be trained on suicide prevention was rejected.
The bill now goes to the House.
