PHOENIX (AP) - A bill allowing some teachers or administrators in rural schools to be armed has been approved by an Arizona Senate committee.

The bill by Republican Sen. Rich Crandall of Mesa is the least sweeping of several proposals to arm teachers introduced in the Legislature and appears the most likely to gain traction.

Crandall says his bill is a measured response to school safety and designed to provide rural schools which are far from law enforcement some protection.

An amendment added at Tuesday's appropriation committee lets retired police officers who now work for schools to carry a gun at any Arizona school.
