DETROIT (WJBK) -

Jurors in the Kilpatrick corruption trial piped up for the first time in nearly a week Tuesday, luring the lawyers back to court to discuss how to answer their request for clarification on the racketeering charge and an extortion count.

"Pretty technical, dry stuff, and all you can really take from it is they're paying attention," said attorney John Shea.

Judge Nancy Edmunds told jurors that both counts discuss the same alleged crime, but they must consider them separately.

Bernard Kilpatrick's lawyer said the question provides no clue how the jury will rule.

"There isn't anything about it one way or the other.  Again, they're being attentive, and they're being careful.  That's all I can really take from it," Shea said.

He had this advice for all you tea leaf readers out there in TV land.

"Throw the leaves say seven or eight times and see if you get the same answer any two times, and I think the answer is no.  So don't read the tea leaves," he said.

As we approach day seven of deliberations, Shea also had some advice for all you clock watchers out there.

"The length of time is meaningless.  The length of time is directly related to the amount of material that they have to go through in order to process the case," he said.

One thing may have come out in court -- the gender of the jury's foreperson.  Then again, maybe it didn't.  The judge said the jury's note came from "him," then added "or her."  So the foreperson may be one of the four men on the jury.  Then again, it may be one of the eight women, which brings us back to the problem with looking for signs.

Meanwhile, we're still waiting for a verdict outside federal court in downtown Detroit.
