PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia will serve as the home for the Eighth World Meeting of Families in September 2015, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced Monday.

The event is scheduled for September 22 through the 27th of 2015.

"I want to thank the Holy Father for choosing Philadelphia and for setting these dates before he concludes his ministry as pastor of the universal Church." Archbishop Charles Chaput said during a Monday press conference.

The archdiocese says Chaput will work closely with Mayor Michael Nutter and Gov. Tom Corbett, who were named as honorary co-chairs of the 2015 event.

Chaput said the Pope did not tell him why Philadelphia was selected to host the event.

The Eighth World Meeting of Families is expected to draw Catholics and others from around the world to the city.
