Theft victim accused of firing at deputies

Posted: Updated:
AGUILA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a man whose truck was stolen in northwestern Maricopa County fired warning gunshots in the dark at sheriff's deputies who had found the vehicle.

The deputies weren't injured and didn't return fire.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Joaquin Enriquez says the truck's owner, 54-year-old Grant Scheer, ignored an order to let deputies handle the search near the community of Aguila early Sunday morning and drove around with 57-year-old John Arthur Mitchell and 46-year-old Stacy Ann Glause looking for the truck.

Enriquez says Scheer initially denied involvement in the shooting and said he saw people running from the truck.

Enriquez says the owner didn't think he was firing at deputies who were about 20 feet away, but his actions were still reckless.

Scheer eventually admitted to firing the shots and is expected to face charges, according to MCSO.

Scheer faces felony charges of two counts of endangerment and one count of disorderly conduct involving weapons.

Mitchell and Glause face misdemeanor charges of one count of false information to law enforcement.
