Upper Gwynedd Elderly Woman Victim of Possible Burglary Spree

Upper Gwynedd Township -

Upper Gwynedd Township Police are investigating a distraction burglary that victimized an 82-year-old woman along the 700 block of Garfield Avenue on Thursday.

FOX29 spoke exclusively with the woman.  We are not identifying her to protect her identity.  She said a man and woman came to her house posing as roofers, when one distracted her while the other stole her safe filled with valuable items including cash and jewelry.

"He said ‘I was driving past your house and I saw you had some shingles off'," she said.

According to the victim, the man asked that his daughter come in to the house because it was cold outside.  The victim said the woman talked to her for some time while the man pretended to work on the house, citing a warranty that would cover any cost.

She later realized the man stole the safe which had important personal papers, cash and rings her late husband gave her.  It also had their wedding bands.

"I really feel sad that this has to happen in this country," she said.

The woman said Chester County authorities contacted her and found her birth certificate there, along with other paperwork that was in the safe.  However she does not expect to recover the jewelry.

Upper Gwynedd police are working with Chester County authorities to investigate this incident and believe it may be related to similar cases in Chester County and Bucks County.

FOX29 first told you about the Bucks County case near Quakertown in which a 92-year-old man was duped into giving a man and woman nearly $200 dollars.  Police say they too posed as roofers.

Police do not have specific descriptions of the suspects.
