FOX 32 Sunday: Reporter's Notebook: Deplorable living conditions

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's rare that we come across a story that really bothers you while at the same time just breaks your heart.

That's what happened to me a couple of days ago when I met a family on the South Side, living in a three bedroom apartment.

Latosha Funches and her two children have been living in the apartment for three years, but just recently she says a mold problem has surfaced so bad that mushrooms are growing out of the ceiling in a couple of bedrooms and in the bathroom.

Funches says she's complained to the property management company, but because she is a HUD tenant, her rent is roughly $23 a month for the three bedrooms, she feels like no one is listening.

Funches told me she's not mad with the federal agency, but she is upset with the owner of the building for moving her family into an apartment that's being renovated.

The alderman of the 20th ward is trying to work with the family to get them a new apartment.
