Rest of road to Grand Canyon Skywalk to be paved

Updated:

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) - The Hualapai Tribe has awarded a $25 million contract to a Prescott company to straighten and finish paving the road that leads to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a popular tourist destination in northwestern Arizona.

The Kingman Miner reports that the tribe paved the first 4.5 miles of the road in 2009, and the contract awarded to Fann Contracting Inc. will finish the remaining nine miles.

The rough road now twists and turns and dips into a wash.

Project manager Erin Forrest says the tribe saved money from federal allotments for reservation roads to pay for the project.

The Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet from the canyon's edge on the reservation.
