Whitey Bulger taken to hospital for heart issues

Posted: Updated:

(MyFoxBoston.com) – A new report claims James "Whitey" Bulger has gone to the hospital again for heart trouble. The Boston Globe also says Bulger has written a telling letter to a friend about his future.

Bulger was examined at a Plymouth hospital on the down low last week for an irregular heartbeat, according to the Globe.

This is the third time Bulger has been checked out for chest pains or heart issues since his arrest in June of 2011 after more than a decade on the run.

The paper reports Bulger wrote to a friend when he got back to his cell. The letter offers quite a glimpse into his physical condition. "Exercise is over for me," the 83-year-old wrote in the letter. He added "Lots of time to think. So far I've had a year and a half and a lifetime to go. This is the end of the trail for me."

The paper says Bulger wrote to longtime friend Richard Sunday, who he served time with in Alcatraz years ago.

Bulger has a reputation for being a physical fitness fanatic and previously said he'd been doing more than 100 pushups a day to stay fit while he remained in isolation. He's complained since being captured that he's only let out of his cell for an hour a day, five days a week and has no access to television or radio.

Bulger is accused of taking part in at least 19 murders and his trial is scheduled for June 6.

When he's not in the hospital, Bulger is being held in a high security unit at the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, where he is not allowed to mingle with other inmates.

For decades, Bulger has suffered from a medical issue related to high blood pressure. His lawyer told the Globe Wednesday that he is confident Bulger will be mentally and physically ready to begin trial in June.

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
