The third state-sponsored gun buyback has left the state of New Jersey with a net haul of more than 5,000 firearms since the program began in December.

The latest gun collection was held Friday and Saturday in Essex County and brought in more than 1,700 weapons, including 1,100 handguns.

Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said Monday the state spent $242,225 in criminal forfeiture funds to buy those guns. Six had been stolen and 70 were illegal. One was a pen gun.

Payments were based on the type of firearm turned in, its overall condition, and legality.

A December buyback in Camden netted more than 1,100 guns. More than 2,600 were collected last month in Trenton.
