ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Sad news from the Detroit Zoo regarding the anticipated birth of two baby giraffes.

According to a post on the zoo's Facebook page Kivuli gave birth to stillborn twin calves on Monday. "Animal care staff has been watching Kivuli for several months in anticipation of her first birth and everyone is saddened by the loss."

The post goes on to say twins are extremely rare in giraffes, but it is not known if that was a factor in the stillbirths.

Veterinarians are conducting post-mortem studies to learn more about the calves and Kivuli continues to be closely monitored.

Visitors like Anna Rzepka Longe are posting condolences to the zoo's Facebook page, 'So very sad about this news. My heart goes out to the hard working animal care and vet staff at the zoo, and of course to the sweet mom giraffe.'
