PFD: Cause of apartment fire may be suspicious

PHOENIX -

At least three families are out of a home after fire damaged an apartment complex near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road Tuesday morning.

Seven adults and three children were sleeping in their homes when the fire began.

Authorities say just after midnight, the fire started in a vacant storage unit on the second floor, then spread to units nearby.

"There's a fire going around, banging on doors, get out of the house, get out of the house! There's a fire, there's a fire, call 911 call 911," says Franklin Jackson Jr.

"We had a little dog, was up and barking at the time, ran up to the door ended up waking up the families and luckily they got out alive," says Brian Gomez.

Luckily, everyone was able to get out safely.

A pregnant woman living in the complex was transported to an area hospital as a precaution. She will be ok.

The vacant unit is a total loss and the other unit sustained damage.  The two first floor units have water damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say it may be suspicious.

Families affected by the fire are being assisted by the Red Cross.
