DeKalb's school board expected to meet ahead of hearing

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

The embattled DeKalb County School Board is expected to meet on Monday, ahead of a second hearing before state education leaders later this week.

The State School Board gave DeKalb school board members 30 days to show progress after a confrontational hearing last month. Interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond says he'll speak for his board Thursday. He believes his board members are ready to turn over a new leaf.

Thurmond says DeKalb business leaders have told him they're concerned about the impact the schools' troubles are having on the county's economy.

The State School Board could recommend the governor remove the entire DeKalb board after the district was put on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The county school board has hired an attorney, and there's speculation they're considering challenging the law that allows the governor to remove them.
