Ga. National Guard unit to deploy to Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

ELBERTON, Ga. (AP) - About 240 citizen-soldiers from a northeast Georgia unit of the National Guard are preparing to leave their families and their day jobs to serve in Afghanistan.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports deploying members of the 214th Field Artillery Battalion marched through downtown Elberton during a send-off parade Friday. Mayor Larry Guest asked the community to pray for the deploying citizen-soldiers while they're gone.

Members of the Georgia National Guard unit have been called up for a year on active duty and are scheduled to leave home Feb. 26 for Camp Shelby, Miss. After weeks of intensive training, the guardsmen are scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in the spring.
