Mother of slain Chicago student touts gun laws

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The mother of slain Chicago high school honor student Hadiya Pendleton is featured in public service announcement demanding that Congress take action to end gun violence.

Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, in the PSA released Friday by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, says Congress can start fixing the nation's gun laws by imposing background checks for all gun sales. She goes on to say common-sense reforms should be passed so no more innocent children are killed and no parent goes through her heartbreak.

Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed last month in a park not far from King College Prep High School, where she was a band majorette.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a coalition started by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg that has more than 800 mayors from around the country.
