Giffords intern: "She was going to make it'

PHOENIX -

He just may have saved the life of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords -- Daniel Hernandez. He was Giffords' intern who treated her in the critical moments after that shooting in Tucson 3 years ago.

Six people died that day. 13 others were injured. Giffords was gravely wounded, after a deranged gunman opened fire during a Congress on your Corner event at a Tucson Safeway.

FOX 10's John Hook spoke to Hernandez about the initial moments after he tended to Giffords.

"She couldn't make eye contact, she couldn't speak, but what she was doing was squeezing my hand. I was asking 'Gabby, my name's Daniel you've just been shot if you understand this has happened squeeze my hand' and she would squeeze it. And I would ask her, if you understand the paramedics are on the way, show me one finger and with the hand that she could still move she was showing me the response to the questions that I was asking and it wasn't just an instinctual response."

That's how Daniel Hernandez knew she was going to make it.
