Pinal County has state's 2nd-highest property tax

Posted: Updated:

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (AP) - Pinal County has the second-highest primary property tax rate in Arizona.

County Manager Fritz Behring says Pinal must manage its money better if it wants to become competitive with Arizona's other 14 counties when it comes to property tax rates.

The Casa Grande Dispatch (http://bit.ly/11KD23E) says a recent audit of the county's jail contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency found Pinal has lost about $12 million alone in general fund money in five years.

Behring says that's just one glaring example of issues that have haunted Pinal County government for years including corruption, nepotism and a general lack of accountability among staff.

He was hired in November 2010 and says the county has made it a priority to hire the most qualified people and not the most connected.
