NIU marks 5th anniversary of deadly shootings

DEKALB, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Gov. Pat Quinn says the days since the deadly shootings at Northern Illinois University have been filled with "hope, strength and compassion."

Quinn attended a memorial wreath-laying ceremony on Thursday at the school's DeKalb campus. The service marked the fifth anniversary since a former student opened fire in a lecture hall, leaving five students dead and many others injured.

The ceremony was at the school's "Forward Together Forward" memorial garden located next to Cole Hall. The building was the site of the Feb. 14, 2008, shootings. Quinn's office says the state dedicated $8 million to pay for renovations at Cole Hall.

Quinn says the Cole Hall work will "ensure it will be a place of learning and achievement" for students in the future.
