Cat that suffered chemical burns has a new face, needs a home

A kitten was found in Detroit with chemical burns on its mouth, nose and face.  At first, Michigan Humane Society vets thought the cat would die, but the kitten is proving to be one tough fighter.

"He got into some chemicals and his face had a lot of dead flesh on it," said MHS spokesman Kevin Hatman.  "He's going to be a little bit disfigured for the rest of his life, but he's just a wonderful, wonderful cat."

A cat with a personality as big as his name -- Chairman Waffles.

"I was originally told Mr. Waffles.  They added the name Chairman.  Apparently he kind of runs the house," Hatman said.

Chairman Waffles was picked up by the Michigan Humane Society in September.  His face was nearly burned off by chemicals he likely tried to eat.  The flesh around his nose and mouth was starting to rot.  Dead skin covered his face making it hard to breathe.

In three surgeries, vets removed portions of the cat's face, a damaged part of his hard palette and preformed reconstructive surgery.  Now he has a new face and he needs a new home.

"An experienced pet owner would probably be best, someone who understands that these animals are going to need a little bit of extra care, but he's not a broken animals.  He is a wonderful, friendly, happy animal who just needs a home," said Hatman.

Chairman Waffles is just ten months old.  He is very active and always curious.  He loves exploring the world with his partner in crime.

Chairman Waffles does have a friend.  His name is Mr. Burns.  The two cats have been fostered together.  Mr. Burns also has a few health problems and will need a very special owner.

The vet would love for these two cats to be adopted together, so if you're home and your heart are big enough, give the Michigan Humane Society a call.
