Arizona lawmaker: Obama immigrant reform unlawful

PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona lawmaker says she will not advance a bill to extend driver's licenses to immigrants granted work permits by President Barack Obama because his order expanding immigrant rights was unconstitutional.

House Transportation Committee Chairwoman Karen Fann says the bill endorsed by immigration reform proponents is not ready for a vote until federal courts rule on Obama's immigration changes.

Fann says Obama acted unconstitutionally by bypassing Congress and announcing in July that people brought to the U.S. before they turned 16 could apply for work permits and Social Security numbers.

Legislation sponsored by Democratic Rep. Catherine Miranda would allow immigrants with work permits to legally drive in Arizona. The Transportation Committee heard from proponents of the bill Thursday.

Gov. Jan Brewer does not support driver's licenses for these youths.
