Woman killed, child shot during violent Detroit home invasion

DETROIT (WJBK) -

A twelve-year-old girl is hospitalized, the survivor of a violent home invasion that claimed the life of her adult sister.  They were inside their home when a group of men posing as police officers stormed inside and started shooting.

"The person who did this, he shot her too many times, and then shot an innocent child," said Rohima Twiddy.

Her daughters were inside a house on Marlowe on the city's west side when a group of men pretending to be Detroit police officers shot both of them killing 35-year-old Chaunta Davis and wounding her twelve-year-old sister, Ruthie Twiddy.

Police say it all started around 6:00 a.m.  The house went dark.  It appears the men cut the power.

According to witnesses inside the house at the time, moments later there was banging on the door and they heard someone yell Detroit police.  But it wasn't.  A masked man came inside, confronted Davis, then shot her multiple times.  A man hid in the closet and called police.

Twelve-year-old Ruthie happened to be in the bathroom at the time.  She told investigators she thought it was the police.  She opened the door and that's when the suspect shot her in the arm and both of her legs.

"I wanted to see for myself," said Marceles Robeson.  "There's blood on the stairs and everything, beds flipped over."

Sources say it's believed Davis was the target.  The motive is unclear.  However, there was something stolen from the house.

We've learned there was a total of eight people inside at the time.  Five of them were children ranging in age from six to 17 years old.  They are now staying with an aunt.

"It was just devastating to me," said the victims' mother.  "When I found out she was at the hospital and I went down there, they said she was dead."

The twelve-year-old girl is recovering at Children's Hospital.  We're told she is in stable condition.

We're also told Davis left the motorcycle club Afro Dogs shortly before the attack.  Police are investigating whether that may have played a role.

If you have any information about this crime, you are asked to call police immediately.
