MADD urging Mich. lawmakers to keep blood alcohol limit at 0.08

It's been credited with helping to reduce the number of drunk driving deaths, but if lawmakers don't take action Michigan's blood alcohol limit could increase.
One in three of us will be affected by a drunk driving crash at some point in our lives. That's exactly why Mothers Against Drunk Driving is urging Michigan legislators to act fast.
The 2003 law that lowered the legal blood alcohol limit from 0.10 to 0.08 had a sunset clause and is set to expire in October. If that happens, the limit will go back up to 0.10.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving says the decrease reduced drunk driving deaths in Michigan by 25 percent and allowing the law to lapse could cost the state millions in federal transportation dollars, something Governor Rick Snyder says should not be allowed to happen.
"It's important we have strict drunk driving rules because we don't want people on the road if they've been drinking," he said.
"I think it should stay the same. I think it's so much easier if laws are pretty consistent across the country. You don't have to worry from state to state what's going on," said Judy McGough.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving testified in Lansing Wednesday in support of a bill that would eliminate the sunset clause and make 0.08 the permanent limit in Michigan. Most people expect the bill to just breeze through the legislature, but MADD says that they will make sure their voices continue to be heard until this bill passes.
