The long rumored and much anticipated merger of American
Airlines and US Airways appears to be a done deal.
Sources said the boards of both airlines have signed off on
final sticking points that will make American the world's largest airline once
again. Neither company would confirm anything, but the source said there should
be a formal announcement Thursday at DFW Airport.
The merged airline is expected to keep the name American
Airlines and its Fort Worth headquarters. US Airways CEO Doug Parker would lead the new
airline.
It will be a long process, but work that employees feel is
worthwhile.
"The merger provides a better future, not just for the
pilots but for all the employees and for all of our passengers and all the
stakeholders in the airline because it will create the largest airline in the world,
" said Scott Shankland with the Allied Pilots Association.
"A merger between two airlines is the biggest jigsaw
puzzle that you can imagine. Labor issues, routes, financial structure, it's
just amazingly complicated business. So even if it's going well it's going to
take a long time," said Mike Davis with the SMU Cox School of Business.
Experts in the travel industry expect the merger, among
other factors, will mean higher prices, but no loss of frequent flyer miles,
more routes and better customer service.
