Despite setbacks, Warren florist still going strong after 50-plus years

WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -

Years ago I did a story on Marylin Palco whose little flower shop was making it just barely.  As Valentine's Day approaches, I decided to revisit Palco to see how she's faring given the economy.  No better, no worse she told me.

"You like what you're doing and then you keep on going because I think it gets to be a way of life and you like to do it and that's what makes it good," she said.

Palco's shop is highly visible from I-696, but not easy to get to.  It's isolated, a flower on a dead end side street.

About that highway, she said, "It was terrible because people couldn't get through and all the different adjustments, then the way they cut off the expressway to come in, that was bad.  We had greenhouses before.  They took the greenhouses down when the expressway went through."

Some of the knickknacks inside her eclectic storefront seemed familiar, maybe unsold since my last visit.  Truth is business was best 35 or 40 years ago.  Palco would know.  She's been in this game awhile.

"1952 is when I started," she said.

Her hands steady and sure, a keen eye for arrangements, at least computer orders from FTD and Teleflora keep the lights on, and, of course, Valentine's Day can still bring in the procrastinators.

"People come on their way from work and then they look off the road, oh, there's a flower shop there.  Oh, we'll pull in," she said.

This Valentine's Day if you're looking for some roses for your lady, consider stopping by Palco's Florist in Warren.  She'd be happy to see you.
