An accident closed part of Interstate 10 in central Phoenix and the closure lasted well into the Wednesday morning commute.
Arizona Department of Transportation officials say the semi-truck rollover crash happened on westbound I-10 at the so-called "Mini-Stack" exchange with Loop 202 and State Route 51.
Authorities say the truck, which was hauling coffee creamer, rolled shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday, leading to a hazmat situation since the truck leaked fuel onto the roadway.
The driver slid about 500 feet down the highway into a guardrail, spilling a bunch of single serve coffee creamer. It made the roadway extremely slick.
The truck's driver suffered minor injuries.
DPS officer Carrick Cook stated, "He says he doesn't know what happened, but we'll look in his log book to make sure he's not over hours or committed any criminal infractions like that. And this might be just a case of sleepy driver."
The cleanup process was not easy. A crew had to transfer hundreds of creamer boxes from the downed semi-truck to another. Then, ADOT had to clean up the slippery mess.
"We've actually had to reroute traffic north on I-17, 51 and 202 and added some significant congestion on those freeways on top of what would normally be there," said Cook.
