GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - A man accused of trying to take about a dozen Glendale store employees hostage while brandishing a fire extinguisher has been arrested.

Glendale police say 23-year-old Ryan Herman is being held on suspicion of unlawful imprisonment, assault, shoplifting and aggravated assault of an officer.

Police say the incident began Sunday when Herman allegedly tried to steal a pack of cigarettes from Walmart.

When an employee confronted him, he reportedly left the store with the cigarettes and returned to throw his keys at an employee.

Store employees told police Herman ordered them to sit on the floor of the break room and lock the door.

Police arrived and saw Herman holding the fire extinguisher.

The officer deployed his Taser on Herman and arrested him.
