Javelina herd visits Cave Creek home

Updated:
CAVE CREEK, Ariz. -

A Cave Creek woman received a shock Saturday morning when she looked outside and saw a javelina herd near her home.

No barking, no growling -- just sniffing.  It doesn't seem like your typical javelina-dog encounter.

"He was very curious, definitely he's never seen javelinas before..it's pretty interesting," said Sarah Price.

Price was taking video of the javelina outside her home's fence near Tatum and Via Dona around 9 a.m. when her 1½-year-old chihuahua mix, Bentley, came barreling through the open door.

"He was watching them for sure," she said.

Dogs and coyotes are natural predators of javelina -- they can hurt or even kill each other.

"I was kind of worried because they were so close from the fence..hopefully they don't start fighting or anything," said Price.

According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, javelina tend to come closer to homes for food, water or shelter.

Not only is the wash near the home something that the javelina tend to follow, but the landscape is a virtual buffet for them.  They tend to like cactus or any other plants that drop fruit or nuts.

"We've had them here many times, just never that close," said Price.  "I haven't seen them up at the fence like that."

AZGFD says mountain lions and bobcats prey on javelina.  Just last week, the Prices took a photograph of a bobcat staring back through their fence.

From now on, the rule at the Price household is their three chihuahuas and one cat will not go outside alone.

"Hopefully, he doesn't get too comfy with them because they're not always going to be that friendly," said Sarah.

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers.
