WILMINGTON, Del. -
Investigators were still on the scene Monday night, several hours after a gunman burst into the New Castle County Courthouse and shot two women and two officers.
The building, which was on lockdown for several hours, will be closed Tuesday.
Witnesses described a terrifying scene that unfolded just after 8 a.m. when the gunman burst into the New Castle County Courthouse lobby and shot two women and two officers before he was killed.
The two women died while investigators say the bullet proof vests the two officers were wearing stopped the bullets.
A law enforcement official initially named David Matusiewicz as the shooter. His name appeared on the sign-in log for a child support hearing. But now that official says that David was not the gunman.
"At first it started off as two, and then from there it just escalated and went from two to multiple shots,'" juror Robert McNulty told FOX 29's Claudia Gomez. "All you heard was 'get down, get down, get down' and shots kept firing."
Another juror, Greg Simpson, described the scene as "terror."
"It was like, okay, this can't be happening in a courthouse. But yes, it's happening at the courthouse," Simpson said.
Police say the gunman entered the courthouse lobby from a side entrance, then took aim at two women standing in the lobby. The gunman, according to investigators, apparently had then fired on two officers.
A gunfight ensued.
The gunman died in the lobby of the courthouse. Investigators say they're not sure yet whether he took his own life or whether he was killed by the officers.
Late Monday afternoon, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden made clear the shooting was not random.
"This was not, I reiterate, not a random act of violence," Beau Biden said during a 3 p.m. news conference.
Biden told reporters preliminary information shows the shooting was the result of a custody dispute.
"Preliminarily, this was the result of a custody dispute that has lasted in our court system for several years."
Investigators say the gunman never got past security checkpoints.
Victim Identified
FOX 29's Claudia Gomez and Dave Schratwieser have confirmed one of the victims has been identified as Christine Belford.
Belford, a mother of four, was involved in a custody dispute, FOX 29 has learned.
Police tape surrounds the court house in Wilmington after three people were killed, including the gunman.
