Parent Trigger On A Roll

A revolution that started on the streets of Compton and made its way into the California desert has scored a major victory.

I'm talking about the "parent trigger" revolution, the state law that allows parents to go up against teachers unions and force change at failing schools, schools that are languishing year after year in the bottom ten percent of the state.

When the law was first tested three years ago in Compton, the parents faced deep resistance from the unions and the school district. Ultimately, the parents formed their own charter school and the revolution continued in Adelanto, California.

Parents in that desert community rose up to form their own coalition to transform a failing elementary school into a new charter school. Legal battles ensued but the parents prevailed.

And it wasn't easy.

The California Teachers Union tried to sabotage the parents' efforts, standing in the way at every turn.

I'd like to hear your Point of View. Send me an email at POV@fox11.com

And that's what makes the most recent "parent trigger" news so exciting.

LAUSD superintendent John Deasy was on hand personally to receive the latest "parent trigger" petition from parents of  L.A.'s 24th Street Elementary school.

Rather than putting up a fight, like the other districts, Deasy seems to be accepting responsibility.

I just hope the teachers unions stay out of the way. The sooner the parents can make decisions to reform the school by either turning it over to a charter or replacing the administration, the sooner their children have a shot at a better education.

Thanks for reading.

California's High-Speed Rail Authority is still selling their so-called bullet train, by saying they're going to get from Madera to Fresno to Bakersfield. There's a problem though.
