DETROIT (WJBK) -

Police say a 72-year-old woman is expected to recover after she was shot several times by a man who broke into her west side home early Friday morning.

Detroit police say the 23-year-old man forced his way into the woman's home in the 15800 block of Sussex around 5 a.m. and fired several shots, striking her in the body. She was transported to a local hospital and is listed in temporary-serious condition.

The suspect fled the scene, but police were able to track him using fresh footprints in the snow. He was taken into custody while hiding in a vacant home.

No further details have been released.
