SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

A snowstorm pushing its way east dumped several inches of fresh snow throughout southeast Michigan Friday, forcing hundreds of schools to close and leaving motorists with a slow morning commute.

FOX 2's Ben Bailey says the last of snow will make its way through the state's thumb area this afternoon, leaving behind dry conditions for the next two days.

Over 650 schools closed Friday because of the storm. School closings were also reported in counties including Bay, Midland, Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee. The University of Michigan-Flint announced that it would be closed due to the storm. It canceled classes and most events.

In Detroit, Wayne State University closed Friday due to the snow. The school said it would reopen on Monday, weather permitting. And in Mount Pleasant, Central Michigan University closed.

Nancy Cain, spokesperson for AAA, says the morning commute was tricky. She says AAA fielded hundreds of calls from stranded motorists.

Snow totals varied from south to north. Detroit Metro Airport reported 1.8 inches of snow, while Ortonville recorded 6.5 inches. In West Bloomfield, 3.7 inches of snow was measured.

The remainder of the day will be blustery and cold with wind gust topping 20 mph and high temperatures reaching 30 degrees.

Saturday will be sunny but chilly with a high of 26 degrees. Clouds will increase on Sunday leading up to late-night rain and a milder high of 36 degrees.
