I spoke with former LAPD Police Chief Bill Bratton today about the intensive manhunt for accused killer, Christopher Dorner. He was LA'S Top Cop when the fired LAPD police was still on the force.
I asked Bratton if he had ever seen anything quite like it?
Bratton responds:
"I've been in the business since 1970, never seen anything quite like this. Smaller versions of it where someone has threatened someone.. gone after individuals. But the scale of this one, committed by a former police officer, involves police officers, think it's fairly unique. Not aware of anything quite like it. "
Diaz asks : How do you hunt a suspect who is hunting you?
Bratton responds:
" Actually some of the strength is the idea that they work so well together. For example, the Police Chief in Riverside, who lost an officer, and another wounded is a former Deputy Chief, who worked with me in the LAPD.
So, there's a camaraderie of police officers, no matter where they work. There's also the linkage of officers who have now moved on to other organizations. The skill set of officers, those I knew in LA County were unmatched."
Diaz asks: We have a picture of you side by side with Christopher Dorner, do you have any personal recollections you can share today?
Bratton responds:
" Actually, I do not. That photo is what I woke up to this morning. I basically flipped on the news. Coincidentally, came in on this story. I was watching the national news, looking at a photo of me with this officer.
That photo would have been taken in my office. He went back into service, when he returned from active duty; I have a practice of when an officer is activated, bringing them up to the office, taking a photo, giving them a "challenge coin" . .a token of good luck."
