Police shoot man with knife at Pa. train station

Posted: Updated:

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say transit police shot a man who refused to drop a knife in a crowded bus and train station just outside Philadelphia.

It happened at the 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby around 8 p.m. Wednesday. The station was immediately closed after the incident, but no other injuries were reported.

Upper Darby police say the suspect came at the officers and refused to drop his knife. The officers then fired, hitting him in the arm, shoulder and side.

Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says the 55-year-old suspect was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Chitwood says it appears the man may have been trying to commit "suicide by cop." He says it appears the officers were in fear of their lives and responded appropriately.
