A suspected rapist is back in custody after he tries to escape from a Detroit hospital and gets stuck.
He was at the hospital recovering after he was shot in the groin during a police sting operation on Tuesday night. The man was accused of deviant sexual behavior and tried to pull a fast one on Wednesday at St. John Hospital in Detroit.
Police say the 19-year-old asked to use the restroom and then climbed through the ceiling tiles, planning a brave escape. Detroit police eventually grew suspicious of his extended bathroom break and went in after the man.
The hospital was locked down and the second floor was evacuated. One man said he was temporarily detained by police after he was mistaken for the missing man. "I was in my room getting ready to go out and use the restroom and the officer pulled me to the side. He asked my nurses who I was. I didn't like the fact that they thought it was me," the man said.
But the suspect did not get far. Police found him stuck inside the hospital walls, he'd reinjured himself. The night before he had been shot by police during an undercover operation on Park Grove. The suspect thought he was meeting a stripper, instead undercover officers were meeting him. Police tried to arrest him and that's when the suspect pulled his gun and was shot twice.
Sources tell Fox 2 the man was still wearing his backless hospital gown when he was taken back into custody. He was scheduled to be re-evaluated by doctors before being transferred to Detroit Receiving Hospital which has a full-time police unit.
