Family sets the record straight about courtroom rapper

WARREN, Mich. (WJBK)

A bizarre display during a video arraignment at Warren's 37th District Court as a man raps his response to the judge.

26-year old Callius Moon was arrested on Tuesday on charges of disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and damaging a patrol car. Now his family wants to set the record straight, not about the rap but about something far more complicated, mental illness.

Naveck Moon, a nurse, is Callius's mother and says her son is on some serious medication for his mental issues. "My child is not well, he's been mentally disabled for the last three or four years" she said. He also has a diagnosis of depression and paranoid schizophrenia.

But Callius doesn't like to take his meds and when he's not medicated, he raps. That was the case on Monday when he walked across the street to a gas station on Eight Mile in Warren.  Moon started rapping, dancing outside, annoying the customers,  and eventually a clerk called the police.

Warren officers tried to question him but all Moon did was rap back and when they tried to lead him over to the police car he resisted, they struggled, knocking the mirror off the patrol car. His family wishing police had realized he was mentally ill.

"What they should have done was take him to the crisis center so now he has even longer delay in his treatment because now he's sitting in the Macomb County jail he still doesn't have any medication" Naveck Moon said.

Instead he went to court and performed for the judge. "When have you seen that before? That should have gave a clue that there's something wrong with this guy," Calvin Moon said.

The family is now reaching out to the jail to make sure Callius gets his medications and they are asking people to have a little compassion instead of just laughing.
