ATLANTA -
The Georgia State Patrol has released the names of those that were killed in a deadly change-reaction crash on Interstate 16 near Dublin in Laurens County on Wednesday morning.
Troopers say Michael Jarome Smith, 52, of Covington, Joel Moore of Effingham County as well as Clayton and Josephine Warnock, both of Dublin, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
They say the wreck, involving 27 vehicles in up to 10 separate crashes, occurred around 8:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the interstate. They say seven commercial vehicles were involved, including an empty tanker truck that ruptured and caught fire.
According to the GSP, reports indicate the incident began with a chain reaction crash. They say as other vehicles approached the first crash, separate chain reaction crashes followed.
The GSP says nine people were injured, and they were taken to Fairview Hospital in Dublin.
Both eastbound lanes reopened to traffic during the early evening hours on Wednesday. One westbound lane remains closed. It is not known when it will be reopened.
Police say a combination of thick fog, and smoke from a controlled burn created the conditions that led to the multi-vehicle accident.
