NYPD: Baby inside stolen car found

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A car thief that made off with an SUV with a baby inside later ditched the car with the baby in the Bronx, police said.

A couple and their 7-month-old daughter in the back seat of their 2005 Jeep Cherokee stopped at Morris Avenue and East Kingsbridge Road at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The father got out to go into a cellphone store. The mother also got out of the car, but it's not clear why, police said.

That's when a thief got inside and drove off, prompting a search by the NYPD.

Just over an hour later, police found the car at Jerome Avenue and Goble Place, with the baby inside, police said.

The girl was taken to Montefiore Medical for evaluation.

Cops are looking for the suspect. They released surveillance video on Wednesday of the man.

He is described by police as heavy set, wearing a black and white striped shirt, jeans and a baseball cap.

Contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers if you recognize the man.
