Moynihan Station developer aims to move college in

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The developer tasked to reconfigure the Eighth Avenue post office into the New York City's new Moynihan Station has a new pitch aimed at improving the long-delayed project's viability. It wants to install the Borough of Manhattan Community College there.

The New York Times reports that Related Companies wants to move the 25,000-student college from downtown to the 33rd Street building. In exchange, it would receive the college's four city blocks near the Hudson River to develop.

Related was contracted eight years ago for a $14 billion transformation of the post office and Penn Station, which serves Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road and subways. The plan collapsed in 2008.

The Cuomo Administration and City University of New York acknowledge they have discussed the idea but neither endorsed it.
