ATLANTA -

It seems in today's economic climate, lawmakers will try anything to generate income for their state, and that includes taxing sneaker purchases.

That's what one Illinois lawmaker is proposing, according to an article posted at Stltoday.com.

The report says Illinois State Representative Will Davis wants to add 25 cents to every sneaker purchase to raise money for a youth job program in the state. He says the tax would bring in an estimated $3 million.

The proposal is not a shoe-in. The merchants association in Illinois says they will fight the proposal.

Special taxes on products in the state are not new. Illinois residents have been paying a $2.50 fee on tire purchases for years, says the report.
