Authorities say a charter bus heading from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. to Pennsylvania crashed into an overpass in Boston, injuring 33 people Saturday evening.

Massachusetts State Police said the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. when an oversized bus carrying 42 people, including high school students and chaperones, attempted to pass under a bridge when it crashed on Soldier's Field Road.

Authorities say the bus was too high for the roadway.

Several passengers were trapped on the bus for hours. Firefighters stood on top of the bus using boards to extract them.

A Boston EMS spokeswoman says 33 people were taken to hospitals. One person sustained life-threatening injuries and three sustained serious injuries. 30 others suffered minor injuries.

The Boston Fire Department tweeted that 60 firefighters were at the scene and many emergency responders joined in the rescue efforts.

State police are investigating the accident.
