Minneapolis teen takes plea deal in Nizzel George murder

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A 17-year-old Minneapolis boy has taken a plea deal in the murder of 5-year-old Nizzel George last summer.

George was sleeping on his grandmother's couch near the corner of Camden Avenue North and 45th Avenue North on June 26 when bullets ripped through the house, striking the boy in the back.

Stephon Shannon pled guilty to one count of second-degree intentional murder is expected to be sentenced to 28 years in prison. The other three charges he faced were dropped.

Prosecutors say they will never know whether Shannon fired the shot that killed George, but they say he was one of the two teens who opened fire on the home in retaliation for a gang shooting.

Shannon has been in jail on $2 million bond since his July 2 arrest. He was initially charged with aiding and abetting murder before an indictment of first-degree murder. He will be formally sentenced on Tuesday.

A 15-year-old also arrested in the death is in the process of being certified to stand trial as an adult.
