APS: Metal detectors not working on day of shooting at middle schoolMore>>
Metal detectors were not working at Price Middle School on the day a 14-year-old student was shot, Atlanta Public Schools officials said.
Telvis Douglas was treated and released from Grady Memorial
Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the back of his neck in the
shooting on Thursday.
In a statement released late Friday, APS officials said that they "have learned that there has been limited use of the detectors at Price this school year."
The statement went on to say that one of the two metal detectors at the school is now working.
Earlier Friday, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said an argument between two groups led to Thursday's shooting at Price Middle School in Atlanta.
Turner said that gunfire erupted after an argument between two groups.
Turner said that the victim was part of one of those groups but said it
is not clear if the victim was particularly targeted. Police said
believe the argument could have been gang-related.
A school resource officer disarmed and apprehended the alleged shooter immediately after the incident, according to police. That suspect, a 15-year-old student at the school, faces numerous charges. The district attorney will decide if he will tried as an adult.
The shooting took place in a courtyard outside the school, according to police.
Investigators recovered a .380 caliber handgun and three spent shell casings. The total number of shots is under investigation. Turner said it is not clear where the shooter got the gun.
Turner said there were no other weapons found at the school.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed vowed to do whatever takes to secure school campuses.
The mayor defended the reaction to the shooting, saying that precautions had to be made before releasing information to the public. Some parents had complained about the amount of time it took to receive information.
Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis said that the district wanted to be sure that the information that was released was correct.
Reed said he would like to see cameras placed in Atlanta's schools and link that with the city of Atlanta's video system in order to be able to spread information quicker.
