Tucson woman gets jail, probation for child abuse

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson woman who pleaded guilty to child abuse after being accused of starving her baby son has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and 10 years' probation.

Pima County prosecutors say 23-year-old Ashley Kammerer could have received up to 15 years in prison at Thursday's sentencing.

She entered a plea agreement in the case last October and acknowledged that she failed to provide necessary nutrition to her 23-month-old son.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/W77sqr) says Kammerer found out when she was five months pregnant that her third child would be born with a congenital defect.

The baby weighed 14.1 pounds in June 2010 and just 14.5 pounds in September 2011.

Police say the boy nearly doubled his weight after being removed from his mother's home.
