Security changes made following Price Middle School shooting
Security officials at Atlanta schools are making immediate changes to the security at several of the facilities. Internal discussions identified some holes in security after a 14-year-old boy was shot at Price Middle School on Thursday.
At some, but not all of the schools, security changes were made on Friday morning.
It has been learned that some of the schools use a separate entrance for teachers and staff, and another for students. School administrators have been told by APS to end that practice.
It was discovered that at the schools with the separate entrances, the students who arrived on time would go through standard security. If a student came in late, that student would not undergo the same security checks.
"It's our top priority to make kids are safe. At other schools changes are being made and simplifying procedures. At all of our schools we want to make sure we standardize our procedures," said Stephen Alford with Atlanta Public Schools.
Everyone, including teachers, is now going through a metal detector.
An e-mail was issued overnight reviewing, and simplifying the lockdown process. When they have a lock-down, a simple message to go to lockdown that everybody can understand will be issued, doing away with codes. This was done to make sure security measures that need to go into place are understood by everyone.
Under the lockdown policy, APS officials said they'd like to get all the students in a main building during an emergency.
Atlanta police and Atlanta Public School officials are now meeting to go over the events of Thursday's shooting that injured 14-year-old Telvis Douglas.
