NORTHBROOK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A 12-year veteran of the Northbrook Police Department has been placed on unpaid administrative leave after being charged with armed violence and burglary for allegedly stealing jewelry from a home in the north suburb while investigating a report of an open door.
After a 5-month investigation, Patrol Officer Enrique Guzman, 34, was arrested on Wednesday by fellow members of the Northbrook Police Department and FBI agents, a release from Northbrook police said.
Guzman is initially charged with armed violence (because he was armed while committing a crime), residential burglary, and official misconduct, based upon knowingly committing those offenses while acting in his official capacity as a sworn police officer, the release said.
Guzman is accused of committing a theft of property -- jewelry -- while on-duty and responding to a call of an open door at a home in the north suburb, the release said.
Guzman appeared in court for a bond hearing at the Skokie Courthouse on Thursday, where his bond was set at $30,000, according to the release. Conditions of bond included turning in his firearms, FOID card and passport. Guzman will be put on electronic monitoring if he posts bond. He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave by the Northbrook Police Department, the department said on Friday.
His next court date has been scheduled for February 22.
