Cleanup continues after EF-3 tornado hits north Georgia

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. -

A massive cleanup continues after a tornado pummeled parts of north Georgia on Wednesday. The powerful EF-3 twister, packing winds of 135 to 165 mph, lifted cars and destroyed many buildings.

About 50 to 75 people came out on Thursday and the help from other communities is appreciated by those affected by the storms. People from Home Depot in Rome and Chattanooga came to help with the slow process of rebuilding.

Four generations of one family credit a homemade storm shelter for saving their lives when the tornado struck Adairsville on Wednesday.

The storm shelter was built by a man and his son more than 40 years ago, according to the Baker and Jackson families.

All three homes on their family property were destroyed by the fast-moving storm.

"My dad made the remark that people made fun of us or laughed because we would go in and he said, I bet they won't laugh now,'" said Misty Baker.

The hardest part about the cleanup on Friday will be the weather. Temperatures are expected to get no higher than in the 40s.
