WASHINGTON -
The morning after a nightmarish trip for hundreds of passengers on Metro's Green Line, the transit agency's general manager says he's sorry.
Two trains were trapped without power between the Navy Yard-Ballpark and Anacostia stations for almost two hours Wednesday night, as firefighters responded to reports of smoke in the tunnel. It turned out a piece of equipment was smoking.
Passengers took it on themselves to evacuate the trains and walk out of the tunnel.
General Manager Richard Sarles says a WMATA emergency responder may have inadvertently flipped the wrong switch in a control box and zapped the electricity to the two trains.
Sarles says he apologizes for the long delays and to any passengers who felt alarmed. He says the investigation launched Thursday is aimed at making corrections and improvements.
