Organizers: Plan In Place For Philly Bike Race

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It appears the pieces of a plan to hold a bike race in Philadelphia may be falling into place, race organizers said Thursday.

Earlier this month, the Philly International Cycling Championship, also known as the Philly Bike Rice, was canceled.

Congressman Robert Brady on Thursday announced that a non-profit group was created to organize and host a race to be called the "Philly Cycling Classic." The new race is described as a "new world-class professional cycling race in Philadelphia" to be held this year.

"The Mayor has called for a premier cycling event and the team we have pulled together intends to deliver nothing less for the City of Philadelphia in 2013," Brady said in a statement.

The organization includes Manayunk Development Corporation Executive Director Jane Lipton, Philadelphia Triathlon, LLC CEO Richard Adler and local business leader and investor Alan Morrison.

Lipton tells FOX 29 the race is not officially back on at this point, but organizers are certain there will be a race this year.

Lipton said there are still many pieces of the puzzle that must fall into place, but believes things were slowly coming together.
