DETROIT (WJBK) -

Two children and one adult were killed Thursday in a massive pileup on I-75 near Springwells in southwest Detroit.  Dozens of cars and semi trucks went out of control.

Drivers say the snow was falling so fast they couldn't see anything.  Moments later it was deadly chaos.

I-75 was completely reopened by the evening commute.  Police say earlier it was blinding snow squalls and the slippery road conditions that caused this unbelievable crash that stretched as far as the eye could see.

"I really couldn't see a whole lot because when the white out hit, it was like driving blind," said semi truck driver Phillip Bost.  "All of a sudden you heard all the accidents start happening, and I just stopped as soon as I could."

Bost, who was hauling car parts out of Flat Rock, was caught in the middle of the massive, multi-vehicle crash.  He watched as cars lost control and started coming toward his semi truck.

"People injured.  People bleeding.  Some where in their cars and not able to get out.  I saw the firemen using the jaws of life to help other people get out of the cars.  It was just a mess," he explained.

Bost got out to help the injured involved in the chain reaction crash involving more than 30 vehicles that led to a 300 car backup.

Semi trucks were jackknifed, some cars bumped and others crushed upon impact.

Michigan State Police say a total of three people were killed in two separate crashes about 200 feet apart, including a man from Allen Park in his fifties.  His silver Pontiac Vibe was wedged under a car hauler.

In one car pileup, two children who were sitting in the back of a Mazda lost their lives -- a seven-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl, stepsiblings from Windsor, Ontario.  Their parents and a ten-year-old sister are all in critical condition.

Lisa Czarnecki's husband was also hit when the cars collided.  He called her moments after.

"I asked if he was okay and he said yes," she explained.  "He said there [were] several cars and the situation was not very good, that he knew there were some fatalities surrounding him."

Ambulances from all over metro Detroit responded, rushing to transport the injured to several different hospitals.  The Detroit Fire Department and other agencies helped in the rescue efforts.

Michigan State Police handled the investigation.  Lieutenant Michael Shaw said the enormous accident was caused by the blinding snow squalls and the slippery roads.

"We got a little spoiled by the weather yesterday being in the sixties and then we come back to the realization of winter and icy roads again today.  People sometimes drive too closely and these chain reactions happen," he remarked.

An army of tow trucks, front loaders, maintenance crews and street cleaners cleared the scene.  That took about seven hours.

Czarnecki waited for her husband to eventually leave grateful he was one of the lucky ones.

"I'm relieved that my husband's okay, but I'm very sad for others who are injured or beyond," she said.

We're told at least 30 people were injured and a dozen of them were taken to four different hospitals.  Two people remain in critical condition.
