Firefighter’s arm reattached after beltway accident

LANHAM, Md. -
Surgeons have reattached a firefighter's severed arm after his fire engine crashed with a tractor-trailer on the Capital Beltway.
Seven people were hurt in the accident early Wednesday morning in Lanham, including four firefighters from the West Lanham station.
After the crash, Lt. Ryan Emmons, was rushed to Baltimore's Union Memorial Hospital and underwent nine hours of surgery to successfully reattach his right arm. It had been severed from the elbow down.
Doctors credit Emmons' colleagues for saving his arm by wrapping it in ice. So far, the surgery has been a success, but doctors are keeping a close watch on his progress.
Police say the fire engine was leaving an accident when it tried to make a U-turn and collided with the tractor-trailer.
